Major GOPIO Accomplishments

A legacy of service to the Indian diaspora since our inception in 1989

Foundation of GOPIO 1989

GOPIO organization was formed at the first convention of PIOs. Passed 23 resolutions including PIO Card and Dual Citizenship for NRIs/PIOs from Govt. of India and concerns of rights violations in different countries.

Fiji Human Rights Petition 1990

Filed human rights violations petition to the U.N. on behalf of PIOs in Fiji in 1990.

Sri Lanka Human Rights Petition 1992

Filed human rights violations petition to the U.N. on behalf of PIOs in Sri Lanka.

Constitution & First Election 1993

Second Global Convention in New Delhi. GOPIO adopts its constitution and conducts the first election according to the new constitution.

PIO Card Proposal 1994

GOPIO proposed PIO card to Govt. of India.

Heads of States Meetings & Book Release 1995

Special meetings with various heads of states with large Indian population. Release of the book in New York, "Indian Diaspora, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow".

Trinidad Investment Meeting 1996

Trinidad Investment Meeting with P.M. Basdeo Pandey, New York.

Freedom 50 Conferences 1997

Freedom 50 Conferences to celebrate India's 50, New York, June, July and August. Conference "Changing Role of Indian Women Worldwide," Mumbai, November.

Senior Citizens Conference 1998

Conference on Senior Citizens of Indian Origin, New York, in September that resulted in the formation of National Indian American Association for Senior Citizens, Inc.

10th Anniversary Celebration 1999

GOPIO's 10th Anniversary Celebrations & GOPIO Convention '99, New York, September.

UN Accreditation & Zurich Convention 2000

Conference on Social Services for the Indian American community, New York, in May that resulted in the formation of South Asian Council for Social Services. GOPIO Convention 2000, Zurich, Switzerland. Campaign for Fiji Crisis, since May 2000, met the U.N. Human Rights Commission on the Fiji Issue, July 2000.

UN NGO Accreditation & Solidarity Rally 2001

GOPIO accredited by the U.N. as an NGO to participate in the World Conference against racism. GOPIO sends a delegation of ten people to the U.N. Conference. GOPIO's Solidarity Rally against terrorism. Funds raised to benefit American Red Cross.

Kolkata Memorial & Biennial Convention 2011

GOPIO Annual Conference, January 6, New Delhi, preceding Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2011. At GOPIO's initiative, India's Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi inaugurated the Kolkata Memorial on Jan 11, 2011 at Kidderpore Depot along the Hoogly River in Kolkata. GADAR Centennial & Book Release 2012

GOPIO annual conference January 6, 2012, Jaipur, preceding Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2012. Organized reception and dinner in Kolkata on Jan 10, 2012 for TnT's Prime Minister. Indian Diaspora Conference in cooperation with Gujrat University, Jan. 12-13, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. GOPIO International launched GADAR Centennial Commemoration in the USA, on Nov. 3, at the Embassy of India, Washington, DC. The GOPIO book "Global Indian Diaspora – GOPIO Making an Impact" released by Ambassador Nirupama Rao.

GOPIO annual conference January 6, Jaipur, preceding Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2013. At Kochi PBD, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh released a postage stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of Gadar Movement. Indian Arrival Monument unveiled in Highbury, Guyana, May 5. GOPIO Regional Convention along with GOPIO International Women's Conference and Gala Dinner, November 9, Sydney, Australia.

Silver Jubilee in Trinidad & Tobago 2014

GOPIO Annual Conference, January 6, New Delhi, preceding Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2014. The 25th (Jubilee) Anniversary Convention 2014, Port of Spain, May in Trinidad & Tobago. It was the first time that GOPIO organized its convention and General Body meeting in a Caribbean country. Indian Arrival Monument unveiled in Trinidad.

Nepal Earthquake Relief & Women Conference 2015

GOPIO held its 26th annual General Body Meeting and Commemorative Dinner, June 5-6, New York. Organizes a comprehensive conference session on "Women of the Indian Diaspora", dedicated to the memory of late Dr. Sushila Gidwani-Buschi. GOPIO raise funds for Nepal Earth Quake Rehabilitation. A school in a remote village was rehabilitated.

Paris Convention & Biennial Election 2016

GOPIO organized its biennial election using electronic balloting with a new Executive Council taking over. GOPIO donates funds to repair the damaged and locked-up Raktakali Primary School, Kot Timal in a remote area of Nepal. GOPIO Biennial Convention 2016, June 24-26, New York. Chief Guest: Guyana Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo. GOPIO-EUROPE Convention, Nov. 10-13, 2016, Paris, France.

GICC Launch & Business Summit 2017

GOPIO Convention in conjunction with Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bengaluru, Jan. 5th and 6th. Inauguration of GOPIO International Chamber of Commerce (GICC), Jan. 10, Mumbai. US launch of GICC held in New York on April 28th. GOPIO Global Business Summit – Build-Up Africa, May 19-20, Durban, South Africa.

Bahrain Convention & Health Summits 2018

GOPIO Biennial Convention 2018, Bahrain, Jan. 6-9, 2018. Attended by Bahrain officials Sheikh Khalifa bin Duaij Al Khalifa, Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Dr. Sam Pitroda. Valedictory Address by Shri Rahul Gandhi, MP. GOPIO Health Summit in New York, October 27, 2018. GOP IO Diabetes Summit in Los Angeles area, November 4, 2018.

Varanasi Convention & 30th Anniversary 2019

GOPIO Convention 2019, Varanasi, Jan. 19-21, 2019. Attended by Minister V.K. Singh and Minister Alphone Kannanthanam. GOP IO Health Summit in Edison, New Jersey, USA, October 12, 2019. GOPIO 30th Anniversary Convention, Berlin, Nov. 8-10 and Paris, Nov.11-12, 2019.

COVID-19 Frontline Support 2020

GOPIO Chapters provide N95 masks and food items to frontline workers during Covid lockdown and replenish food pantries during the Pandemic. GOPIO International and chapters organize programs on virtual platforms including several medical and health related seminars and panels discussions.

India COVID Relief & Minister Visit 2021

GOPIO International and its chapters mobilize campaign to raise funds for the worst Covid disaster in India and sent Oxygen generators and medical supplies to India. GOPIO International and GOPIO-CT Chapter host Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Mr. V. Muraleedharan.

Community Leadership Honor 2022

GOPIO International and chapters organize many virtual program including one by former Niti Aayog Vice Chairman and Columbia University Professor Dr. Aravind Panagariya on ways India can "regain the lost glory." New York City Mayor Eric Adams honor GOPIO for its community leadership.

Turkey Earthquake Relief 2023

GOPIO Chapters raise funds for Turkey earthquake and send relief materials from New York to Turkey. GOPIO conducted the election and a new team was elected.

35th Anniversary Convention 2024

GOPIO organizes Convention 2024 in Fords, New Jersey, USA on April 28, 2024. 35th Anniversary Celebrations & Global Convention with participation from chapters worldwide.
