Global Organization of People of Indian Origin — Since 1989
The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) is a non-profit, non-religious, and non-political organization that seeks to connect People of Indian Origin (PIOs) worldwide. Founded in 1989, GOPIO has grown into a powerful voice for the Indian diaspora, with chapters in over 100 countries.
GOPIO serves as an active partner and significant stakeholder in the phenomenal march of India towards global leadership in various fields. We are dedicated to the welfare of People of Indian Origin, fostering closer ties with Mother India, and working towards the betterment of our global community.
Our initiatives span cultural exchange, economic empowerment, social welfare, and advocacy for the rights of NRIs and PIOs across the world. From organizing conventions to humanitarian relief efforts, GOPIO stands at the forefront of diaspora engagement.
A legacy of service to the Indian diaspora since our inception in 1989
GOPIO organization was formed at the first convention of PIOs. Passed 23 resolutions including PIO Card and Dual Citizenship for NRIs/PIOs from Govt. of India and concerns of rights violations in different countries.
Filed human rights violations petition to the U.N. on behalf of PIOs in Fiji in 1990.
Filed human rights violations petition to the U.N. on behalf of PIOs in Sri Lanka.
Second Global Convention in New Delhi. GOPIO adopts its constitution and conducts the first election according to the new constitution.
GOPIO proposed PIO card to Govt. of India.
Special meetings with various heads of states with large Indian population. Release of the book in New York, "Indian Diaspora, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow".

Freedom 50 Conferences to celebrate India's 50, New York, June, July and August. Conference "Changing Role of Indian Women Worldwide," Mumbai, November.
Conference on Senior Citizens of Indian Origin, New York, in September that resulted in the formation of National Indian American Association for Senior Citizens, Inc.
GOPIO's 10th Anniversary Celebrations & GOPIO Convention '99, New York, September.
Conference on Social Services for the Indian American community, New York, in May that resulted in the formation of South Asian Council for Social Services. GOPIO Convention 2000, Zurich, Switzerland. Campaign for Fiji Crisis, since May 2000, met the U.N. Human Rights Commission on the Fiji Issue, July 2000.
GOPIO accredited by the U.N. as an NGO to participate in the World Conference against racism. GOPIO sends a delegation of ten people to the U.N. Conference. GOPIO's Solidarity Rally against terrorism. Funds raised to benefit American Red Cross.

GOPIO Annual Conference, January 6, New Delhi, preceding Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2014. The 25th (Jubilee) Anniversary Convention 2014, Port of Spain, May in Trinidad & Tobago. It was the first time that GOPIO organized its convention and General Body meeting in a Caribbean country. Indian Arrival Monument unveiled in Trinidad.
GOPIO held its 26th annual General Body Meeting and Commemorative Dinner, June 5-6, New York. Organizes a comprehensive conference session on "Women of the Indian Diaspora", dedicated to the memory of late Dr. Sushila Gidwani-Buschi. GOPIO raise funds for Nepal Earth Quake Rehabilitation. A school in a remote village was rehabilitated.
GOPIO organized its biennial election using electronic balloting with a new Executive Council taking over. GOPIO donates funds to repair the damaged and locked-up Raktakali Primary School, Kot Timal in a remote area of Nepal. GOPIO Biennial Convention 2016, June 24-26, New York. GOPIO Chapters provide N95 masks and food items to frontline workers during Covid lockdown and replenish food pantries during the Pandemic. GOPIO International and chapters organize programs on virtual platforms including several medical and health related seminars and panels discussions.
GOPIO International and its chapters mobilize campaign to raise funds for the worst Covid disaster in India and sent Oxygen generators and medical supplies to India. GOPIO International and GOPIO-CT Chapter host Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Mr. V. Muraleedharan.
GOPIO International and chapters organize many virtual program including one by former Niti Aayog Vice Chairman and Columbia University Professor Dr. Aravind Panagariya on ways India can "regain the lost glory." New York City Mayor Eric Adams honor GOPIO for its community leadership.
GOPIO Chapters raise funds for Turkey earthquake and send relief materials from New York to Turkey. GOPIO conducted the election and a new team was elected.
GOPIO organizes Convention 2024 in Fords, New Jersey, USA on April 28, 2024. 35th Anniversary Celebrations & Global Convention with participation from chapters worldwide.
